The initial batch depends on the sales in the pre-sale, but we aim to have the first units ready to ship by 11th of December 2024. This is an estimate and goal based on our experience, but as always with complex manufacturing, delays might occur.

If you, at any point, want to cancel your order before shipping, please contact support@cinestillfilm.com

The VALOI easy120 provides a comprehensive but easy-to-use scanning solution for most available roll film formats while requiring no copy stand or separate light source. It attaches directly to your macro lens using precision-machined aluminum distance tubes, perfectly aligning the film and sensor for sharp scans. The built-in CineStill CS-LITE light source is very bright and provides three different color temperature modes specifically made for different film types (C41, B&W, E6).

Compact, Minimal Setup

The VALOI easy120's design allows it to have a very small footprint, similar to a standard keyboard. Removing the distance tubes allows it to fit easily in a drawer for storage in between scanning sessions. No bulky copy stand or separate light source needed.

Quick, Easy to Use

A roll of film can be captured in as little as 1-2 minutes, thanks to the easy120's clamp-less, pull-through film holder design. The film holders' double S-curve ensures perfectly flat film, providing you with great quality images.

Modular, Comprehensive Solution

The easy120 is modular and multi-format oriented. It ships with a 120 Universal Holder (6x9 maximum size). Holders for 35mm, 120 Sub-Formats, 35mm Mounted Slides are now available for pre-sale. Other accessories like the Duster and Advancer further improve the quality and efficiency of your scanning process.

  • VALOI easy120 body with built-in CineStill CS-LITE inside

  • VALOI easy120 120 Universal Holder (6x9 maximum size)

Cinestill CS-LITE Inside

Built into the easy120 is a CineStill CS-LITE unit, a tried-and-true LED  film scanning light source already used by thousands of discerning VALOI 360 scanning system users. The CS-LITE is USB-powered and requires a 5V/1.6A power brick (typically a phone charger) with USB-A. Even a small/older one will power this unit.

The CS-LITE was chosen because it fulfills all the criteria of a great scanning light source: it has a CRI 95+ rating, variable color temperature, and high brightness (EV 15+) with low heat-output. The three pre-set color temperature modes are optimized for scanning slides, B&W negatives, and color negatives. With the color negative mode, you will get improved color separation and noise levels from orange masked  color negative film.

In use

To use the easy120, you first attach the different lengths of distance tube to get the right framing for your film format of choice. Then, you add the end-cap with a 62mm filter thread and whatever (included) filter-thread adapter you need for your macro lens. Plug in the light source, turn it on, and insert a film holder by simply pushing it into the slot.

To scan, push the film into the film holder's slit, adjust the focus, and start scanning. For most lenses, we recommend scanning in a horizontal setup with the included Camera Support Bracket. For internally focusing lenses you can also scan in a vertical position.

Once you have scanned your film, you import the digital images to a computer or phone and process them using one of the recommended pieces of software mentioned below.

Lens Compatibility

The easy120 is compatible with all system cameras (cameras with interchangeable lenses), including digital medium format cameras. While fixed-lens cameras are generally not recommended, acceptable results can be achieved with high-end fixed-lens models like the Leica Q3 (28mm and 43mm) when scanning medium format.

The easy120 has two limitations on lens compatibility:

  1. The filter thread on the lens must be one of the following filter threads: 39mm, 46mm, 49mm, 52mm, 55mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm

  2. When focusing on the film you want to scan, the distance from the front of the lens to the film must be smaller than 310mm. You can test this on your own, by placing the format you want to scan on the table and trying to focus on it, then measure the distance from the front of the lens to the film.

Maximum extension from filter ring: 315mm*

The following tubes are included and can be used to adjust the distance between film and lens:

  • 2x 100mm

  • 1x 50mm

  • 1x 25mm

  • 1x 12mm

*This number includes distances not related to the distance tubes.

Approximate compatible focal lengths

Note that because there are many factors at play, we cannot guarantee that your setup will be compatible - we will do our best to advise you but the safest way is to measure it yourself using your lens and desired film format (see above).

Maximum focal length for APS-C sensor: 70mm

Maximum focal length for FF sensor: 105mm

Maximum focal length on MFT sensor: 50mm (60mm lenses can be used for scanning 35mm only)

Maximum focal length for GFX/Hasselblad X sensor: 120mm

Using shorter focal length lenses has the benefit of making for a more compact scanning setup. This can be practical if you have a smaller desk or want to travel with your scanning setup.

Enlarger lens

No, most enlarger lenses have a not-compatible filter thread on the front (often 40.5mm)*

*A 40.5mm to 62mm filter thread adapter can be purchased from a third party and the lens possibly used. Keep in mind that mounting an enlarger lens for use with the easy120 requires a sturdy helicoid. Using bellows is not recommended, as they might bend under the weight of the easy120.

Camera Scanning Considerations:

Camera Body

Just about any semi-modern, interchangeable-lens digital camera will work great for camera scanning. There are many mirrorless or DSLR options to choose from with large lens catalogs, tethered capture capability, and excellent image quality. Some high end cameras can even use pixel stitching to deliver extremely high levels of resolution.

Software for Negative Conversion

There are a few plugins and standalone programs for converting captured negatives into positive images. Some older and some newer, all of them try to harness the color science based in darkroom paper to various degrees. After all, even a professional lab scanner is essentially a digital camera and a light source. Most of the options presented here allow you to download a demo version to try before you buy and determine which one best suits your workflow.
